Asymptomatic adenomyosis: what it means

It may be noticed during imaging or assessment for another reason. If you feel well, treatment may not be needed; the appropriate plan depends on how certain the finding is, why imaging was performed, your menstrual pattern and your reproductive goals.

Adenomyosis describes tissue resembling the womb lining within the muscular wall of the womb. Some people have no noticeable symptoms, while adenomyosis can present with heavy periods, painful periods or pelvic pain in others.

An imaging report may describe features that suggest adenomyosis rather than provide certainty by itself. Your clinician interprets those features alongside your history and examination. A symptom-free finding does not automatically require medicine, a procedure or repeated scans.

Keep a copy of the imaging report and mention the finding when discussing fertility, pregnancy planning or future gynaecological care. There is no need to repeatedly check for symptoms each day, but knowing your usual cycle makes a meaningful change easier to recognise.

If treatment becomes relevant later, choices are based on the symptom being treated and whether you wish to become pregnant. Options can include medicines, a hormonal coil or selected procedures; surgery is not a routine response to an incidental, symptom-free finding.

Arrange an appointment if periods become distinctly heavier, pain begins or worsens, bleeding occurs between periods or after sex, your abdomen seems persistently swollen, or you have difficulty becoming pregnant. These changes deserve assessment because adenomyosis is not the only possible explanation.

Get urgent help for sudden severe pelvic pain, fainting, fever with pelvic pain, pregnancy with pain or bleeding, or bleeding that rapidly soaks through protection. Urgency comes from the symptom and your condition at that moment, not from the incidental adenomyosis label.

Ask which imaging features suggested adenomyosis, whether another finding needs follow-up, what symptoms should prompt reassessment, and whether the diagnosis affects planned fertility treatment, pregnancy care or contraceptive choices.
