What should you know about asthma rash?

The rash's appearance, timing, itch, pain, spread, and relationship to a new medicine or exposure help narrow the cause. Skin symptoms appearing with breathing difficulty or facial swelling require immediate attention.

People with asthma may also have allergic tendencies affecting the skin or nose. Raised itchy welts can occur during an allergic reaction, while dry, inflamed, itchy patches may reflect eczema. Heat, sweat, soaps, plants, animals, dust, and workplace substances can irritate skin and may separately aggravate breathing.

A rash beginning after a new tablet, injection, inhaled medicine, or dose change may be a medicine reaction, although timing alone cannot confirm it. The inhaler mouthpiece can also leave local irritation where it touches the skin, which differs from a widespread eruption.

Take clear photographs in good light and note when the rash started, where it first appeared, whether it comes and goes, and what touched the skin beforehand. Record new medicines, foods, supplements, personal-care products, cleaning agents, and recent illness. This timeline is more useful than trying to name the rash from colour alone.

Avoid suspected contact irritants, keep the skin cool, and use a plain moisturiser if the skin is dry and unbroken. Do not stop a prescribed asthma controller suddenly because of a mild rash without obtaining clinical advice; instead, contact the prescriber promptly to discuss a safe plan.

Call emergency services for a rash accompanied by trouble breathing, throat tightness, wheezing that is rapidly worsening, swelling of the tongue or face, faintness, confusion, or collapse. Use prescribed emergency treatment according to the person's action plan while help is coming.

Urgent assessment is also appropriate for blistering or peeling skin, sores involving the eyes or mouth, a painful rapidly spreading rash, fever with marked illness, or purple spots that do not fade when pressed. These warning signs are based on the rash and the person's condition, not on how commonly asthma and rashes occur together.

Ask whether the pattern resembles eczema, hives, contact irritation, infection, or a medicine reaction. Confirm which treatment can be used on the affected body area, whether allergy assessment is appropriate, and exactly how asthma medicines should continue while the rash is evaluated.
