Short answer

Good asthma control supports both parent and baby, so continue prescribed treatment and arrange an early medication review.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Do not stop suddenly
Changing a preventer without advice may allow inflammation to worsen.
Bring to reviews
Carry your inhalers, spacer and written asthma plan.
Coordinate care
Keep both the maternity and asthma teams informed about symptom changes.

Why control remains a priority

Pregnancy can leave asthma unchanged, improve it or make symptoms harder to control. Wheezing, cough, chest tightness and disturbed sleep can signal that the airways are not adequately controlled. Keeping breathing stable helps maintain oxygen delivery and reduces the chance that an avoidable flare disrupts pregnancy care.

Many asthma medicines are inhaled, delivering treatment directly to the airways. A maternity or asthma clinician weighs the known benefit of control against medicine-specific considerations. Stopping a preventer suddenly can allow airway inflammation to return, so medication decisions should be made with the prescribing team.

Plan treatment with your care team

Tell your antenatal clinician and asthma prescriber about every inhaler, tablet and over-the-counter product you use. Arrange a review early in pregnancy, bring your inhalers and demonstrate your technique. Ask for a written action plan that explains daily treatment, what to do when symptoms rise and whom to contact after hours.

Take preventer medicine on schedule and keep a reliever available as instructed. Reduce exposure to personal triggers such as smoke, dust or strong fragrances where practical. Treat associated nasal symptoms only with options checked for pregnancy, because uncontrolled allergic rhinitis may make breathing symptoms harder to manage.

When to get urgent help

Seek emergency care if breathlessness is severe or worsening quickly, you cannot speak comfortably, lips look blue or grey, you feel faint or confused, or the reliever does not help after you follow your action plan. Do not wait for a routine antenatal appointment when breathing is significantly impaired.

Contact your asthma or maternity team promptly if night waking returns, usual activities become difficult, wheeze or tightness is increasing, or you need the reliever more often than your plan allows. A flare during pregnancy warrants follow-up even after symptoms settle.

Points to cover at a review

Confirm the purpose of each medicine, whether the device and spacer suit you, how your control will be monitored, and what the plan is for labour and after birth. Also ask who should review any flare and how quickly that review should happen.

Questions people ask

Can I use my asthma inhaler while pregnant?

Many prescribed inhalers are continued during pregnancy. Confirm your exact medicines with the prescriber, but do not stop them while waiting for a review.

Does pregnancy always make asthma worse?

No. Asthma may improve, worsen or remain stable, which is why symptom tracking and planned reviews are useful.

Should I mention asthma during labour planning?

Yes. Sharing your medicines, triggers and action plan helps the maternity team prepare and maintain your usual asthma care.
