Chest X-rays for people with asthma

Asthma affects the airways, and a chest X-ray may look normal even when wheezing, cough or chest tightness is present. The image shows structures in the chest rather than directly measuring airflow. Clinicians may use it to look for problems such as lung infection, a collapsed area of lung, air around a lung, or an inhaled object when the history or examination suggests one of these.

A normal report does not rule out asthma. Diagnosis and monitoring usually depend more on the symptom pattern, examination and breathing tests. An unexpected finding must be interpreted alongside your symptoms rather than treated as an asthma result on its own.

Tell the imaging team if you are or might be pregnant, and remove jewellery or clothing items when instructed because metal can obscure the view. The test itself does not require you to stop prescribed inhalers. Continue your asthma medicines unless the clinician arranging the image gives different instructions.

Ask who will explain the report and when. If the X-ray is normal but symptoms continue, follow the planned assessment; airflow testing or a review of inhaler technique may still be needed. If another problem is seen, management will depend on that finding and your clinical condition.

Seek emergency help for severe breathlessness, difficulty speaking in full sentences, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, marked drowsiness, or symptoms that continue to worsen despite following the reliever instructions in your asthma plan. Do not wait for an X-ray appointment or report when these warning signs are present.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for fever with worsening cough, sharp chest pain, coughing up blood, or a sudden change from your usual asthma pattern. These features can guide whether imaging or another test is appropriate.

You could ask: What specific problem is this X-ray checking for? Who will contact me with the result? If it is normal, what is the next step in assessing my breathing? Should I have an airflow test or an inhaler-technique check? Which symptoms should make me seek help before follow-up?
