Asthma-like breathing problems in dogs

Airway inflammation or narrowing can cause cough, noisy breathing, wheeze, faster breathing or reduced willingness to exercise. These signs can also occur with infection, chronic bronchitis, heart disease, a foreign object, parasites or problems involving the throat and windpipe. A cough alone cannot identify the cause.

A veterinarian will ask when the episodes occur and examine the dog's breathing and heart. Depending on the findings, assessment may include chest imaging, blood tests, parasite checks or sampling from the airways. A short video of an episode can help distinguish coughing from gagging, reverse sneezing or breathing distress.

Keep the dog calm and move them away from smoke, incense, perfume sprays, dusty rooms and strong cleaning fumes. Use a harness instead of pressure from a collar until a veterinarian has assessed coughing or noisy breathing. Note triggers, episode length, appetite, energy and any change in gum colour.

Treatment depends on the diagnosis and may involve veterinary medicines that reduce inflammation or open the airways. Some dogs are trained to accept an inhaler through a veterinary spacer and mask. Never give a human inhaler, cough medicine or leftover prescription unless the veterinarian has specified the product and dose for that dog.

Go to an emergency veterinary service immediately if the dog is breathing with an open mouth at rest, using the abdomen forcefully to breathe, stretching the neck for air, collapsing, seeming distressed, or developing blue, grey or very pale gums. Keep travel cool and quiet, and call ahead if possible.

Book a veterinary visit for a recurring cough, wheeze, reduced stamina or faster resting breathing even when the dog seems comfortable between episodes. Earlier assessment helps separate airway disease from heart, infectious and structural causes that require different treatment.

Ask which diagnoses fit the breathing pattern, which tests would change treatment, and how to recognise worsening effort at home. If an inhaled medicine is prescribed, request a demonstration of the mask seal, cleaning method and signs that the dog has received the dose.
