What should you know about asthma cough symptoms?

The cough may be dry, recur at night or early in the morning, or appear after running, laughing, cold air, smoke, dust, fragrance, or a respiratory illness. Symptom-free periods between flares can also occur.

A changing pattern linked to triggers supports consideration of asthma, particularly when wheeze or tightness appears at the same time. Asthma often presents this way, but no single cough sound or trigger confirms the diagnosis.

Nasal allergy may add sneezing, congestion, an itchy nose, or throat clearing. Infection may bring fever or feeling unwell. The clinician separates these possibilities through the history, examination, and breathing measurements when they are appropriate and reliable.

Keep a brief symptom record covering timing, activity, suspected exposure, sleep disruption, accompanying breathing changes, and prescribed reliever use. This can reveal variability that is hard to recall during an appointment.

Use medicines according to your individual plan and have the inhaler technique checked. Arrange evaluation for a new recurrent cough or a known asthma pattern that is changing, limiting activity, or interfering with sleep. Avoid smoke and personally recognised irritants while the cause is being assessed.

Call for urgent medical care if there is severe breathlessness, difficulty speaking, blue or grey colouring around the lips, confusion, faintness, unusual exhaustion, or worsening breathing despite following the emergency instructions in the asthma plan.

Chest tightness that escalates quickly or visible struggle with each breath also warrants prompt action. Urgency comes from the breathing difficulty and other red flags, not from whether asthma is a common explanation for cough.

Ask which features support asthma, what alternative causes are being considered, and whether a breathing test or monitored treatment trial is appropriate. Clarify which symptoms belong in your action plan and when a change in cough should prompt follow-up.
