Treating asthma alongside allergic rhinitis

Asthma medicines are chosen to control airway inflammation and relieve narrowing, while rhinitis care targets sneezing, itching, congestion and a runny nose. Treating the nose may improve comfort and sleep, but nasal treatment does not replace prescribed asthma preventer or reliever medicine.

Allergic rhinitis commonly presents with nasal itching, repeated sneezing, watery discharge and congestion after relevant allergen exposure. Asthma commonly presents with variable wheeze, cough, chest tightness and breathlessness. Postnasal drainage or blocked-nose breathing can also complicate how cough and sleep symptoms feel.

A clinician separates nasal symptoms from lower-airway symptoms before choosing devices. Nasal sprays act locally in the nose; inhaled asthma medicines must reach the lungs. Correct technique for each device changes how much medicine reaches its intended site.

Use each medicine according to its label and personalised plan. For a nasal spray, clear the nose gently, aim the nozzle away from the central septum and avoid forceful sniffing. For an inhaler, demonstrate your technique at review and use a spacer when prescribed.

Track nasal blockage, sleep, cough, wheeze and reliever use together. Reduce exposure only when a credible trigger has been identified; practical measures should fit the home, school or workplace rather than rely on indiscriminate cleaning or dietary restriction.

Emergency help is required for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, collapse, confusion, inability to speak comfortably or worsening symptoms that do not respond to the prescribed reliever. Nasal congestion alone is uncomfortable, but these lower-airway red flags determine urgency.

Book a timely review when wheeze or cough disrupts sleep, reliever use increases, nasal blockage remains troublesome despite correct treatment, or medicine causes repeated nosebleeds, tremor or palpitations. New facial pain, fever or thick discharge may need assessment for a problem other than allergy.

Ask which symptoms come from the nose and which suggest asthma, how long each medicine should be used, and whether your spray and inhaler techniques are correct. Request a written asthma action plan and discuss whether targeted allergy testing would change exposure advice.
