The label may be used for a clinic package or laboratory panel rather than a distinct diagnostic technique. A useful report should state whether it measured allergen-specific IgE in blood, used skin testing, or used another method, and it should list exactly what was tested.

A positive specific-IgE or skin test shows sensitisation: the immune system recognises that substance. It does not prove that exposure causes symptoms, and a stronger laboratory signal does not predict how severe a future reaction will be. Diagnosis comes from matching the result with the timing, route, and pattern of actual symptoms.

Broad panels can find sensitisation that has never caused a problem. Avoiding many foods or environmental exposures solely because they appear on a panel can create unnecessary restrictions. Food-specific IgG testing is not used to diagnose an immediate food allergy, so check the antibody name rather than relying on words such as comprehensive or intolerance.

Write down what you were exposed to, how quickly symptoms began, which body systems were affected, what treatment helped, and whether the same pattern occurred again. Bring that history, the complete report, ingredient labels, and photographs of any rash to a clinician experienced in allergy.

Do not deliberately retry a suspected trigger after breathing difficulty, throat symptoms, faintness, or a widespread reaction. If food allergy remains uncertain, a specialist may consider a supervised oral challenge; this should not be attempted at home. For nasal or eye symptoms, the clinician may instead compare results with seasonal, pet, or indoor exposure patterns.

Call emergency services for trouble breathing, wheezing with distress, swelling of the tongue or throat, a hoarse voice, collapse, confusion, or rapidly worsening symptoms affecting more than one body system. Use a prescribed adrenaline auto-injector immediately if the person's action plan says to do so, then seek emergency care even if symptoms improve.

Ask whether the test was validated for the suspected allergy, which positive results match your history, and which findings can be ignored. Clarify whether you need targeted repeat testing, a supervised challenge, an inhaler review, an adrenaline auto-injector, or a written emergency plan before removing foods or making major changes at home.
