What a positive allergy test means

Sensitisation means the immune system recognises the tested substance. Some sensitised people tolerate that substance without symptoms, so the laboratory or skin result should not be read in isolation.

A clinician compares the positive finding with the suspected exposure, the delay before symptoms, the organs involved, and whether the pattern recurs. A result that matches immediate hives after a particular food has different significance from an unexpected positive item on a broad panel with no related symptoms.

The size of a skin response or level of allergen-specific IgE may support the assessment, but it does not independently describe the likely severity of a future reaction. Cross-reactivity between similar proteins can also create a positive finding that needs further interpretation.

Discuss whether the tested allergen actually fits your symptoms before changing your diet, medicines, work, or home environment. Bring photographs of skin reactions, ingredient labels, a timeline of exposures, and details of any treatment used.

Depending on the history, the clinician may advise avoidance, education on label reading, an emergency plan, repeat testing, or a medically supervised challenge. Do not deliberately expose yourself at home to prove whether a positive result matters.

Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty, a tight or swollen throat, faintness, collapse, or symptoms affecting several body systems after exposure. Use prescribed emergency medicine as directed in your personal action plan.

Prompt assessment is also appropriate after a new reaction involving wheeze, repeated vomiting, marked facial swelling, or rapidly worsening hives. A previously mild response does not determine how the current episode should be managed.

Ask whether the finding matches your symptoms, whether cross-reactivity could explain it, which exposures require avoidance, and whether you need an adrenaline auto-injector. Clarify what to do after an accidental exposure and when the diagnosis should be reassessed.
