The connection between allergic rhinitis and asthma

Both involve sensitive, inflamed airways and may respond to some of the same triggers. Rhinitis mainly causes sneezing, itching, discharge, and nasal blockage; asthma affects the lower airways and may cause wheeze, breathlessness, chest tightness, or cough.

The nose, throat, and lungs form a continuous breathing system. Allergens and irritants can affect more than one part, so a person with asthma may notice that nasal symptoms and chest symptoms flare around the same exposures. Treating rhinitis can improve nasal comfort, but it does not replace prescribed asthma treatment.

A cough from throat drainage can resemble an asthma symptom. Asthma becomes more concerning when cough comes with wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, night waking, or limitation during exercise. Clinical assessment may include listening to the chest and testing airflow.

Track nasal and breathing symptoms together, including exposures, exercise, nighttime waking, and medicine use. Avoid tobacco smoke and vaping aerosols, and reduce contact with a confirmed allergen where feasible. Take each nasal or inhaled medicine exactly as directed rather than swapping one for the other.

If you already have asthma, follow your written action plan and check that inhaler technique remains correct. Tell your clinician when you need a reliever more often than usual, symptoms wake you, or normal activity becomes harder.

Promptly arrange an assessment for new wheezing, recurring chest tightness, breathlessness with ordinary activity, a cough that wakes you, or symptoms triggered by exercise or allergens. These features warrant evaluation even if nasal allergies are already diagnosed.

Seek emergency care when breathing is severely difficult, speech is limited by breathlessness, the lips look blue or grey, you become drowsy or confused, or prescribed reliever medicine is not providing the expected relief. Follow the emergency steps in your asthma plan if you have one.

Ask whether your cough sounds more consistent with throat drainage or lower-airway narrowing, whether airflow testing is appropriate, and how your nasal and asthma medicines should fit together. Bring your inhalers and nasal sprays so technique can be checked directly.
