Runny nose from allergic rhinitis

Short answer

Allergic rhinitis often presents with a clear, watery runny nose together with sneezing or itching.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Sneezing, itching, and a repeatable exposure pattern

Blot gently and protect irritated external skin

The short answer

The discharge begins when the nasal lining reacts to an allergen such as pollen, dust mites, mould, or animal dander. Symptoms may settle when exposure ends or continue when the trigger remains nearby.

Reading the symptom pattern

Allergy is more consistent with repeated bouts linked to a place, activity, season, or exposure, particularly when itchy eyes or nose occur too. A viral respiratory infection may instead bring general unwellness, throat symptoms, or a changing discharge, although symptoms can overlap.

Fluid leaking persistently from only one nostril, especially after a head injury or nasal procedure, does not fit the usual allergy pattern and needs prompt medical advice. Blood-stained discharge or a bad smell from one side also deserves examination.

Calming a runny nose

Start by recording where and when attacks happen, then reduce avoidable exposure without making daily life unmanageable. Wash your face after dusty outdoor activity, change exposed clothing, and avoid directing air conditioning or fans across dusty surfaces.

Saline spray or rinse can remove allergens and thin secretions; use sterile or appropriately prepared water according to product instructions. Antihistamines may reduce itching, sneezing, and watery discharge. A clinician or pharmacist can advise whether a nasal spray is more suitable for persistent mixed symptoms.

Frequent wiping can irritate the skin beneath the nostrils. Blot gently with soft tissue and use a simple fragrance-free barrier on the external skin, keeping creams out of the nasal passage unless specifically intended for it.

When to get help

Seek a routine assessment when the runny nose persists without a clear trigger, affects sleep or concentration, or accompanies facial pressure, loss of smell, repeated bleeding, or ear discomfort. Review is also useful if treatment causes troublesome sleepiness or dryness.

Call for urgent medical help if symptoms occur with difficulty breathing, throat swelling, collapse, or a severe rapidly developing allergic reaction. Following a significant head injury, clear one-sided drainage should be assessed promptly.

Useful questions at a review

Bring a list of suspected triggers and everything you have tried. Ask how to distinguish your allergic pattern from infection or sinus inflammation, and whether medicine timing could improve control without unwanted drowsiness.

Questions people ask

Can allergic rhinitis cause postnasal drip?

Yes. Secretions can travel towards the throat and lead to throat clearing, irritation, or cough, particularly when you lie down.

Is every clear runny nose caused by allergy?

No. Irritants, temperature changes, viral illness, some medicines, and other nasal conditions can also produce clear discharge. The surrounding symptom pattern helps separate them.
