Loss of smell with allergic rhinitis

The change may fluctuate with congestion and allergen exposure. Taste can seem dull at the same time because much of flavour depends on aromas reaching the smell system from the back of the mouth.

A respiratory infection, sinus inflammation, nasal polyps, injury, smoke exposure and some medicines can also alter smell. A sudden loss without the usual itchy, sneezy allergy pattern should not automatically be attributed to allergic rhinitis.

One-sided blockage, repeated nosebleeds or persistent facial pressure needs examination. A distorted smell, where familiar items smell wrong, is also useful to report because it may point to a different recovery pattern or cause.

Limit known allergens, avoid smoking and use saline nasal care to clear mucus and particles. If a clinician has recommended a nasal spray, consistent use and correct direction toward the outer wall of the nostril can improve delivery while reducing irritation to the centre of the nose.

Do not place essential oils or irritating substances inside the nostrils. Until smell returns, check smoke alarms, label food dates, and ask someone else to confirm suspected gas leaks or spoiled food. These precautions address hazards that smell would normally help detect.

Arrange an assessment if smell loss is sudden, persists after congestion improves, occurs mainly on one side, or comes with recurrent bleeding, facial swelling, severe headache or neurological symptoms. A clinician can inspect the nose and decide whether sinus disease or another cause needs investigation.

Seek urgent care after a head injury if altered smell occurs with confusion, repeated vomiting, increasing drowsiness, weakness, seizure or clear fluid leaking from the nose. Difficulty breathing or swelling of the mouth or throat also requires emergency help.

Ask whether blockage fully explains the change, whether the nose needs examination, and how long to continue the recommended allergy treatment before reassessment. Mention the exact onset, recent illness or injury, medicines, distorted smells, and whether the problem is complete, partial or one-sided.
