Itchy eyes with allergic rhinitis

This combination is sometimes called allergic rhinoconjunctivitis. Both eyes are commonly affected, and redness, watering, sneezing or a clear runny nose may appear around pollen, dust, mould or animal exposure.

Itching is a strong allergy clue, especially when both eyes water and symptoms follow a familiar exposure. Sticky discharge that seals the eyelids, marked pain, sensitivity to light or a change in vision is not a typical simple allergy pattern.

Dry eye, contact-lens irritation, infection and particles under an eyelid can also cause redness or discomfort. A one-sided problem deserves particular attention when it persists or feels painful.

Avoid rubbing, which can worsen surface irritation. Wash hands and face after likely exposure, use a cool clean compress over closed lids, and consider preservative-free lubricating drops to rinse and soothe the eyes. Sunglasses outdoors may reduce direct contact with pollen and wind.

Remove contact lenses until the eyes have settled and follow the lens-care instructions. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an anti-allergy eye drop, nasal spray or oral antihistamine fits your symptoms and other medicines; do not share eye drops.

Seek prompt assessment for eye pain, light sensitivity, blurred or reduced vision, an eye injury, a chemical splash, severe swelling, or intense redness affecting one eye. Contact-lens wearers with a painful red eye should remove the lens and obtain urgent advice because the cornea may be involved.

Arrange a non-urgent review when symptoms keep returning, interfere with sleep or work, or do not respond to sensible allergen reduction. Difficulty breathing or swelling of the mouth or throat requires emergency help.

Ask whether your eye findings fit allergy, which drops are compatible with contact lenses and other health conditions, and whether controlling the nasal inflammation may also reduce eye symptoms. Explain whether discharge, pain or vision change has occurred, even if it later improved.
