Dust mites and allergic rhinitis

The mites themselves do not bite or live on people. Sensitive individuals react to proteins in mite particles that become part of household dust. Exposure can prompt sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, nasal itching and itchy, watery eyes.

Symptoms may be noticeable after time in bed, while cleaning, or in rooms with carpets and fabric furnishings. A year-round pattern can still fluctuate as the indoor environment changes. Similar symptoms can come from pets, mould, outdoor pollen or irritants, so timing offers a clue rather than proof.

A clinician may diagnose allergic rhinitis from the history and nasal examination. Allergy testing can be considered when identifying a specific trigger would alter the plan, when symptoms remain difficult to control, or when the connection between exposure and symptoms is uncertain.

Focus first on the bed, where prolonged close exposure occurs. Wash bedding regularly according to its care instructions, keep mattresses and pillows dry, and consider allergen-resistant covers that fully enclose them. Reduce dust-holding clutter near the bed and clean hard surfaces with a damp cloth.

A vacuum with effective particle filtration may reduce dust becoming airborne; someone without the allergy can vacuum if cleaning reliably triggers symptoms. Address dampness and ventilation problems because mites favour humid environments. Avoid relying on strong fragrances or sprays, which can irritate the nose even when they do not cause an allergy.

Exposure control may not be enough by itself. Saline, an appropriate antihistamine, or a corticosteroid nasal spray may be discussed with a pharmacist or doctor based on whether itching, sneezing or blockage is dominant.

Seek urgent care for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, fainting, or swelling of the tongue or throat. Wheezing, chest tightness, night-time cough or breathlessness should be assessed because allergic airway conditions can occur together and may require a separate treatment plan.

Schedule a visit if symptoms repeatedly disturb sleep, affect daily function, or persist despite careful exposure reduction and correctly used treatment. Persistent one-sided blockage, frequent nosebleeds, facial swelling or worsening pain are reasons to look beyond a straightforward allergy explanation.

Ask whether your symptom pattern supports dust-mite allergy, whether testing would change your care, and which bedroom measures deserve priority. Discuss any wheeze or cough, show how you use nasal medicines, and ask what improvement would indicate that the plan is working.
