How to control hair loss after pregnancy

Short answer
Postpartum hair shedding is often temporary; gentle hair care can limit breakage while the normal growth cycle recovers.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical pattern
- Diffuse shedding from across the scalp
- Main self-care aim
- Reduce breakage and traction while growth cycles reset
- Needs assessment
- Patchy loss, scalp inflammation, or ongoing progressive thinning
The short answer
There is no reliable way to switch the shedding off immediately. The practical goal is to avoid added damage, support adequate nutrition, and check for another cause when the pattern is unusual or does not improve.
Why hair sheds after childbirth
Pregnancy hormones keep more hairs in their growing phase. After delivery, changing hormone levels allow many of those hairs to enter the resting and shedding phase together. This pattern is called telogen effluvium and usually causes diffuse shedding across the scalp rather than one smooth bald patch.
Short new hairs along the hairline may be regrowth, not further damage. By contrast, sharply defined patches, scalp scaling, broken hairs, or a widening part can point to a different problem that deserves assessment.
Protect the hair you have
Wash with a gentle shampoo and apply conditioner mainly through the lengths. Detangle slowly with a wide-tooth comb, reduce high heat, and avoid tight braids, extensions, or ponytails that pull at the roots. A lighter conditioner or volumising style can make the hair look fuller without changing the growth cycle.
Eat regular meals with protein and varied sources of iron and other nutrients. Do not start high-dose hair supplements on your own, because excess amounts of some nutrients can worsen shedding. If you are breastfeeding or taking medicine, check any hair-loss treatment with a clinician before use.
When a check-up is worthwhile
Arrange a medical review if shedding continues without improvement, the scalp becomes painful or inflamed, or you notice smooth bald patches, marked scaling, or progressive thinning in a pattern. Also seek care for fatigue, dizziness, feeling unusually cold, or other symptoms that could accompany iron or thyroid problems.
Get prompt help if a shed hair becomes tightly wrapped around a baby's finger, toe, or other body part and cannot be gently removed, especially if the area is swollen or changes colour.
Useful questions for your appointment
Ask whether the distribution looks like postpartum telogen effluvium, whether your symptoms justify blood tests for iron or thyroid function, and which scalp products or treatments are suitable while breastfeeding. Bring a medicine and supplement list and, if possible, photos showing how the density has changed.

Questions people ask
Does washing make postpartum hair loss worse?
Washing releases hairs that had already entered the shedding phase; gentle washing does not create the underlying postpartum process. Avoid rough scrubbing and forceful detangling to reduce breakage.
Should I take a hair-growth supplement after delivery?
Not automatically. A supplement helps when it corrects a confirmed nutritional gap, while excessive amounts of some nutrients may aggravate hair loss. Discuss testing and product safety with a clinician, particularly while breastfeeding.
