Hair falling out after giving birth: causes and next steps

Short answer
Diffuse hair shedding after giving birth often reflects postpartum telogen effluvium, a temporary shift in the hair-growth cycle.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common pattern
- Postpartum telogen effluvium causes diffuse shedding across the scalp.
- Hair care
- Gentle handling reduces avoidable breakage and traction while growth cycles settle.
- Different pattern
- Discrete bald patches or scalp inflammation need clinical assessment.
The short answer
Hormonal changes around childbirth allow more hairs to enter their resting phase together, so shedding becomes noticeable later rather than immediately. The loss usually comes from across the scalp, and short regrowing hairs may become visible near the hairline as the cycle normalises.
Recognising the shedding pattern
Telogen effluvium commonly presents with increased hair in the shower, brush or on clothing while the scalp itself looks normal. It does not usually create sharply defined bald patches, scarring or a heavily inflamed scalp. Childbirth can be the trigger, but iron deficiency, thyroid disturbance, restricted nutrition, illness and significant stress can contribute to ongoing shedding.
A widening part or thinning concentrated over the crown can be a presentation of female pattern hair loss. Smooth round patches can be a presentation of alopecia areata. These patterns deserve assessment rather than being assumed to be postpartum shedding.
Support hair and scalp while it recovers
Continue normal gentle washing and use conditioner to reduce tangling. Avoid tight braids, extensions and hairstyles that pull at the edges, and minimise repeated high heat or aggressive chemical processing while the hair feels fragile. Eat regular meals containing protein and varied iron-rich foods rather than starting high-dose supplements without a clinical reason.
Take photographs of the part and hairline under similar lighting if you want to track change. Before using a hair-loss medicine or supplement, check suitability with a doctor or pharmacist, particularly while breastfeeding or if another pregnancy is possible.
When to arrange an assessment
Book a medical review if shedding is severe, continues without signs of improvement, or is accompanied by marked tiredness, dizziness, palpitations, feeling unusually cold or unexplained weight change. A clinician may examine the distribution and decide whether blood tests for anaemia, iron status or thyroid function fit your symptoms.
Seek earlier dermatology assessment for smooth bald patches, loss of eyebrows or eyelashes, a painful or inflamed scalp, heavy scaling, broken hairs, pustules or shiny scar-like areas. Those findings can occur with conditions other than postpartum telogen effluvium and may need targeted treatment.
Prepare for your appointment
Tell the clinician when shedding began, whether it is diffuse or patchy, what happened during pregnancy and delivery, and whether you had heavy bleeding, illness, dietary restriction or medication changes. Ask which scalp pattern they see, whether testing is appropriate and which treatments are compatible with breastfeeding and future pregnancy plans.

Questions people ask
Does postpartum shedding mean the follicles have lasting damage?
Telogen effluvium changes the timing of shedding but does not usually destroy follicles. Regrowth can occur as follicles re-enter their growth phase.
Should I stop washing my hair to reduce hair fall?
No. Washing releases hairs that have already entered the shedding phase. Gentle cleansing keeps the scalp comfortable and does not cause telogen effluvium.
Could low iron contribute to hair shedding after birth?
Iron deficiency can contribute, particularly after substantial blood loss or with restricted nutrition. A clinician can decide whether your history and symptoms warrant testing before supplementation.
