Spotting means light vaginal bleeding outside your expected period. Adenomyosis more often presents with heavy or painful periods, and bleeding patterns alone cannot confirm that it is responsible.

Why the bleeding pattern needs context

Hormonal contraception, ovulation, pregnancy-related bleeding, cervical changes, fibroids, polyps, infection and the transition toward menopause can also cause bleeding between periods. A clinician considers your age, pregnancy possibility, medicines, contraception and accompanying pain or discharge.

Blood seen after sex, bleeding that follows a missed period and bleeding after menopause are particularly useful details to report. The colour of blood cannot reliably identify its cause.

Record the pattern and arrange assessment

Note when spotting starts, whether it follows sex, how much protection you need, and whether you have pelvic pain, unusual discharge, fever or dizziness. Record period dates and any recent change in contraception or medication.
