Remedies and treatments for adenomyosis

The aim may be to reduce cramping, control heavy bleeding or address both. A remedy that suits occasional discomfort may not be enough for symptoms that interfere with work, sleep or daily activity, so treatment is adjusted to symptom burden and reproductive plans.

Home measures can ease symptoms but do not remove adenomyosis from the uterine muscle. Hormonal medicines may lighten bleeding and reduce cycle-related pain while they are being used. A hormonal coil releases medicine within the uterus and also provides contraception, although insertion and early bleeding changes need discussion.

Procedures differ in what they treat and their effect on the uterus. Uterine artery embolisation reduces blood flow to affected tissue. Endometrial ablation treats the uterine lining rather than adenomyosis deep in the muscle, so suitability depends on the pattern of disease. Hysterectomy removes the uterus and is considered when definitive uterine treatment is appropriate.

Use a heat pack with a protective layer and try gentle activity or rest according to what feels helpful. Before using a non-prescription anti-inflammatory medicine, ask a pharmacist or clinician whether it is suitable if you have stomach ulcers, kidney disease, a bleeding disorder, asthma triggered by these medicines, take blood thinners, or might be pregnant.

Record bleeding, pain, medicines used and disruption to normal activities. Take that record to a gynaecology appointment and explain whether contraception, future pregnancy or keeping the uterus matters to you. These priorities can rule options in or out before procedural details are considered.

Book a medical review when pain persists despite appropriate relief, bleeding becomes difficult to manage, symptoms occur between periods, or tiredness and breathlessness suggest possible anaemia. Seek urgent care for very heavy bleeding with fainting or marked dizziness, sudden severe pelvic pain, fever, repeated vomiting, or pelvic pain associated with possible pregnancy.
