Adenomyosis explained in plain English

The womb is also called the uterus. The misplaced tissue responds to hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle, which can make the muscle wall thicker or tender. Adenomyosis is different from endometriosis, where similar tissue is found outside the uterus.

Adenomyosis may present with heavy or longer periods, strong menstrual cramps, pelvic pain that continues outside a period, pressure in the lower abdomen, or pain during sex. Some people have little discomfort or no noticeable symptoms.

These experiences are not unique to adenomyosis. Fibroids, endometriosis and other causes can produce similar bleeding or pain, so symptoms alone do not establish the diagnosis. A clinician may use your history, a pelvic examination and imaging such as ultrasound to build a clearer picture.

Keep notes on when bleeding and pain occur, how heavy the flow feels, which activities you miss, and whether you experience tiredness or dizziness. Take this record to a GP or gynaecologist if symptoms trouble you. Heavy blood loss may prompt blood tests for anaemia.

Treatment is based on the problem you want to improve and your future pregnancy wishes. Options may include pain relief, medicines that reduce bleeding, hormonal treatment or a procedure. A hormonal coil can help some people with bleeding and pain. More invasive approaches require a careful discussion of benefits, risks and effects on fertility.

Seek urgent medical help if very heavy bleeding comes with fainting, severe dizziness, shortness of breath, chest pain or confusion. Sudden severe pelvic pain, fever, or severe pain when pregnancy is possible also requires prompt assessment.

See a clinician for pain or bleeding that disrupts everyday life, persistent fatigue, or symptoms that are getting worse. Bleeding between periods, after sex or after menopause needs evaluation because it should not automatically be explained by adenomyosis.

Ask what supports the diagnosis, whether another condition could explain your symptoms, and whether imaging or blood tests are needed. Clarify which option targets bleeding, which targets pain, what side effects to watch for, and how each choice could affect contraception or future pregnancy.
