ACDF operation in German: terms and practical meaning

The wording may vary between hospitals. Diskektomie means removal of disc material, ventral describes the approach through the front of the neck, and Fusion or Spondylodese refers to joining the operated vertebrae.

The surgeon reaches the cervical spine from the front of the neck, removes the affected disc and any compressing material, then places a spacer or bone graft in the cleared space. A plate and screws may be added for stability while the vertebrae fuse.

ACDF may be considered when a compressed nerve causes arm pain, tingling or weakness, or when pressure on the spinal cord affects hand control, balance or walking. The scan findings must match the symptoms and examination before surgery is proposed.

Bring the original scan images, radiology reports, medication list and any previous operation notes. Ask for an interpreter if you cannot comfortably discuss consent, alternatives and complications in the language being used.

Confirm the exact cervical level, the reason for decompression, the proposed implant and the recovery instructions. Follow the surgical team's directions about medicines, eating before anaesthesia, wound care, driving and return to work.

Get urgent medical help for trouble breathing, rapidly increasing neck swelling, inability to swallow liquids, new or worsening arm or leg weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, fainting, or chest pain.

Contact the surgical team promptly if the wound becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen or draining, or if fever accompanies worsening pain. Mild throat discomfort can occur after a front-of-neck approach, but symptoms that intensify or prevent hydration need assessment.

Ask which structure is compressed, whether the goal is to improve pain, protect neurological function or both, and what non-surgical options remain reasonable. Also clarify how fusion will be checked, which neck movements may change, and whom to contact after discharge.
