What to Know About ACDF at C6–C7

C6 and C7 are neighbouring vertebrae in the lower neck. During anterior cervical discectomy and fusion, the surgeon reaches this level from the front of the neck, removes the disc and any compressive material, then places a spacer or bone graft in the empty space. A plate and screws may add stability. The aim is to create room for neural tissue and keep the treated level aligned while bone grows across it.

The operation may be considered when cervical radiculopathy causes arm pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness, or when spinal cord compression affects hand control, balance, or walking. The expected benefit depends on which structure is compressed and how long neurological symptoms have been present.

Follow the surgical team’s instructions for medicines, wound care, lifting, driving, and neck movement. Arrange frequently used items at an easy height and plan help with shopping or strenuous chores. Short, comfortable walks are often used to maintain movement, but activity should stay within the limits set for your operation. Attend follow-up so the clinician can examine the wound, review neurological function, and decide when activities can progress.

Seek emergency help for new breathing difficulty, rapidly increasing neck swelling, severe trouble swallowing saliva, sudden limb weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or a marked new problem with walking. Contact the surgical team promptly for fever, spreading redness, wound drainage, worsening pain that is not controlled as directed, or new arm numbness or weakness. Mild throat discomfort can occur after an anterior approach, but worsening swallowing or voice symptoms deserve assessment.

Ask which findings confirm that C6–C7 is responsible for your symptoms, whether the spinal cord or a nerve root is compressed, what implant and graft are planned, and which symptoms are expected to improve. Clarify your personal restrictions, whether a collar is needed, how medicines should be managed, and what milestones must be reached before work, driving, and exercise resume.
