Breast Implants in Breast Reconstruction

A breast implant is a medical device that can restore breast shape as part of breast reconstruction.

It may be placed at the time of breast surgery or later, depending on your treatment plan and healing. Reconstruction can help recreate a breast contour, but it does not recreate natural breast sensation in the same way for everyone.

Implants come in different shapes, sizes, surface types, and fillings. The choice is based on your chest shape, skin and tissue quality, the other breast if relevant, and the appearance you hope to achieve. Your surgeon can explain which device options are available in your situation.

Implant reconstruction may be direct to implant or may use a tissue expander first. An expander gradually creates space beneath the skin and is later exchanged for an implant. Some reconstructions use supportive material to help position and cover the implant.

The timing can be affected by planned radiation therapy, chemotherapy, wound healing, and personal preferences. A plastic surgeon and breast care team coordinate these decisions with the wider cancer treatment plan.

Autologous reconstruction uses tissue from another part of your body to make a breast mound. Some people choose a flat chest after mastectomy, use an external breast form, or postpone reconstruction while they focus on other treatment. The right option reflects your health, priorities, and treatment sequence.

Bring questions about recovery, drains, activity limits, symmetry procedures, and the effect of radiation to your consultation. Photographs of different outcomes and an examination of your chest can make the discussion more concrete. You can ask for time to decide unless your clinical team says a treatment decision is urgent.

After surgery, contact your care team about increasing redness, swelling, fluid leakage, fever, or pain that is not controlled by your prescribed plan.

An implant is not a device to ignore after surgery. Continue the follow-up plan set by your surgical team and report a change in shape, new tightness, persistent swelling, or a new lump around the reconstructed breast. Further surgery may be needed if a complication develops or your goals change.
