GLP-1 weight-loss drugs in Dubai: 5 numbers patients should check before starting

GLP-1 weight-loss treatment in Dubai is usually a 12- to 18-month clinical commitment, with listed UAE pharmacy prices for injectable semaglutide ranging from about AED 743.50 for starter pens to AED 1,712 for a 2.4 mg Wegovy pen, before consultation, lab and dietetics costs.

Medical directors need clean eligibility rules. CFOs need to know where self-pay becomes a monthly affordability problem. COOs need licensed prescribing and documentation pathways that satisfy Dubai Health Authority (DHA) requirements in Dubai, Department of Health Abu Dhabi (DOH) requirements in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, and Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) oversight in the northern emirates.

What changes in the body

GLP-1 medicines slow gastric emptying, increase satiety and improve glucose regulation. In the STEP 1 trial, 1,961 adults without diabetes and with obesity, or overweight with at least one weight-related condition, received weekly semaglutide 2.4 mg or placebo for 68 weeks. Mean body-weight change was -14.9% with semaglutide and -2.4% with placebo.

Tirzepatide produced larger trial results. In SURMOUNT-1, 2,539 adults received weekly tirzepatide or placebo for 72 weeks. Mean weight reduction was 16.0% at 5 mg, 21.4% at 10 mg and 22.5% at 15 mg, compared with 2.4% for placebo.

For a Dubai patient weighing 100 kg, those trial averages translate to roughly 15 kg on semaglutide over 68 weeks, or 16 kg to 23 kg on tirzepatide over 72 weeks. These are trial averages with diet and activity support, so they set expectations rather than individual promises.

Who qualifies, and when treatment should stop

The practical starting point is body mass index. DOH’s 2025 standard for nonsurgical obesity management lists GLP-1 receptor agonists, including liraglutide, semaglutide and tirzepatide, among approved obesity medicines as of November 2024. It sets a starting criterion of BMI at least 30 kg/m2 with one or more weight-related comorbidities, or BMI above 40 kg/m2.

The same DOH standard gives a hard operational checkpoint: continue GLP-1 treatment beyond six months only if the patient has lost at least 5% of initial body weight. For patients already using GLP-1 therapy, DOH says weight loss should be assessed from pre-treatment weight to three months after the maximum tolerated dose.

In Dubai, DHA’s clinical guideline for virtual management of obesity, issued on 27 July 2021 with a revision date of 27 July 2026, says drug choice should consider comorbidities, insurance coverage, cost and adverse effects. The first consultation should record BMI, baseline weight, HbA1c, lipids, blood pressure, contraindications and the payer position.

• Month 0: record baseline weight, BMI and metabolic labs.

• Month 3 to 6: test whether weight loss is tracking toward 5%.
• Month 12 to 18: discuss maintenance, tapering risk and cost fatigue.

The Emirates Drug Establishment (EDE) said on 1 June 2026 that it had approved oral Wegovy (semaglutide) as a once-daily treatment for long-term weight management in adults with obesity, or overweight with weight-related medical conditions, and for cardiovascular risk reduction in high-risk patients. Patients should verify product, dose, registration status and pack price with a licensed UAE pharmacy on the day of dispensing.

Insurance is the variable cost. In Abu Dhabi, a DOH policy for Thiqa covers obesity management medication only when adult patients meet defined BMI, comorbidity, prescriber and activity criteria, with a four-month effectiveness check and a 5% maintained weight-loss requirement. In Dubai and the northern emirates, patients should ask the clinic to submit pre-authorisation before purchase and request the rejection reason in writing if cover is denied.

GLP-1 care should be sold as physician assessment, prescription-only dispensing, lab monitoring, nutrition support and documented follow-up.
