Yeast infection on the scrotum: what to know

Warm, moist skin folds can become irritated and may support fungal growth. A fungal rash may itch, burn, scale, or form a red edge, while contact dermatitis, eczema, bacterial infection, and sexually transmitted infections can resemble it. Thrush in a partner does not prove that a scrotal rash has the same cause. A clinician can examine the scrotum, groin, and penis and ask about new products, sweating, medicines, and sexual symptoms.

Wash gently, dry the skin thoroughly, change damp underwear, and choose loose breathable clothing. Avoid fragranced products, vigorous rubbing, and sharing towels. Do not put antifungal, antibiotic, or steroid combinations on the scrotum without advice, since delicate skin can react and the wrong medicine may obscure the diagnosis. Avoid sexual contact if rubbing causes pain or until a clinician has addressed possible infection.

Arrange a review if the rash is new, persistent, recurrent, spreading, or associated with discharge, sores, or pain when urinating. Seek urgent care for sudden severe testicular pain, major swelling, fever, vomiting, a new lump, or skin that becomes dark or blistered. These features need assessment for causes beyond a surface fungal rash.
