Yeast infection in the armpit: how to treat it

Yeast can multiply in a warm, moist skin fold. The rash may be red, sore, itchy, or burning, and can have small spots around its edge. Friction, sweat, tight clothing, and trapped moisture can irritate the area. Similar changes can come from contact dermatitis, eczema, bacterial infection, or another rash, so appearance alone cannot confirm yeast.

Wash gently, rinse away soap, and pat the fold dry rather than rubbing it. Wear loose, breathable clothing and change damp clothes promptly. A pharmacist or clinician can recommend an antifungal cream or another treatment suited to the skin and your health history; use it exactly as directed and do not apply steroid cream alone unless advised. Avoid fragranced deodorant, harsh scrubbing, and sharing towels while the skin is irritated.

Arrange an assessment if the rash is spreading, very painful, cracked, oozing, foul-smelling, or not settling with suitable care. Seek prompt medical help for fever, marked swelling, pus, red streaks, or feeling very unwell. People with diabetes, reduced immunity, or repeated rashes may need earlier review and a check for contributing factors.
