The scalp may shed white or yellowish flakes and feel itchy, greasy, tight, or mildly sore. Yeast can thrive where oil collects, so scaling may also appear around the hairline, eyebrows, ears, or sides of the nose. This pattern can overlap with seborrhoeic dermatitis, while simple dandruff is usually limited to scalp scaling. Flaking alone does not prove that yeast is the cause; psoriasis, irritation from hair products, and other scalp conditions can look similar.

Wash the scalp regularly with a gentle cleanser and avoid scratching, which can break the skin. A clinician or pharmacist may suggest a medicated shampoo or an antifungal product, selected for the scalp and used according to its label. Leave a treatment on for the recommended contact time before rinsing, and stop if marked burning or swelling develops. Keep brushes, hats, and pillowcases clean, and avoid layering oily styling products over irritated areas. Improvement may take repeated use rather than a single wash.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if the scalp is painful, bleeding, crusted, producing pus, or losing hair in patches. Seek prompt medical help for rapidly spreading redness, facial swelling, fever, or eye involvement. If flaking persists despite appropriate self-care, a clinician can examine the pattern and check whether another condition is present before recommending a longer treatment plan.
