What should you know about widal blood test?

The test is sometimes used when typhoid fever is being considered. Antibodies can be present for reasons other than a current infection, including prior exposure, vaccination or cross-reactions. A result on its own therefore cannot confirm the cause of a fever. The clinician considers when symptoms began, travel and exposure history, the examination findings, and whether other laboratory tests are needed. Blood culture or other investigations may be more useful in some situations.

You will usually be told how and when the result will be discussed. Give the clinician a complete account of fever, stomach symptoms, rash, headache, recent travel, food and water exposures, medicines and antibiotics already taken. Do not start leftover antibiotics or stop prescribed treatment based only on a test result. Follow the plan for repeat testing, culture samples, fluids and review if your clinician recommends them.

Seek urgent assessment for fever with confusion, trouble breathing, severe weakness, fainting, persistent vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, severe abdominal pain, a stiff neck, seizure, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine. Infants, older adults, pregnant people and people with a weakened immune system may need earlier medical assessment. If symptoms worsen while awaiting results, do not wait for a routine follow-up.

Ask what the result means in your circumstances, whether a culture or another test is needed, which symptoms need prompt review, and when you should expect to improve. If an antibiotic is prescribed, ask how to take it and what side effects or warning signs require contact with the clinic.
