Why is surgical mesh used in sacrocolpopexy?

Short answer

Surgical mesh is used in sacrocolpopexy to suspend and support the top of the vagina or cervix by attaching it to the sacrum through a strong tissue layer.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How sacrocolpopexy provides support

Pelvic organ prolapse can cause the vagina, uterus, or nearby organs to bulge downward. In sacrocolpopexy, the surgeon places mesh along the front and back walls of the vagina, then fixes it to the sacrum, the bone at the base of the spine. The mesh acts as a supportive bridge while tissue heals around it. The operation may be performed through keyhole surgery or an open incision. It is different from a vaginally placed mesh procedure, and the choice depends on the prolapse pattern, previous treatment, health, and informed preference.

Preparing for recovery

Discuss whether the cervix or uterus will remain, how bladder or bowel symptoms will be assessed, and what alternatives are available. Tell the team about constipation, urinary symptoms, medicines, and previous pelvic operations. After surgery, prevent straining as advised, keep moving gently, and follow restrictions on lifting and sexual activity. Attend follow-up so healing and any persistent prolapse symptoms can be checked.

When to seek care

Contact your surgical team for fever, increasing pelvic or abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, foul-smelling discharge, new urinary difficulty, or problems opening your bowels. Report new pain during sex or a feeling of mesh in the vagina. Emergency help is needed for severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, or sudden severe pain.

Questions for your doctor

Ask where the mesh will be placed, how it will be attached, what non-mesh options exist, how bowel and bladder symptoms may change, and which recovery signs need urgent review.
