Why is point-of-care ultrasound used in musculoskeletal ultrasound?

The clinician can inspect tendons, muscles, ligaments, bursae, joints and fluid-filled areas while you move the body part. The probe sends sound waves through the skin and produces images immediately, so the examiner can compare the painful side with the other side and connect an image with tenderness or restricted movement. This is different from relying on a still image alone: movement may reveal tendon snapping, altered tracking or fluid that changes with pressure.

The scan does not expose you to radiation. Its usefulness depends on the body region, the quality of the images and the clinician’s interpretation; deeper structures or bone interiors may need another test.

Wear clothing that allows easy access to the area being assessed and bring details of when the pain began, what movements aggravate it, and any previous imaging. During the examination, you may be asked to move, tense or relax the area. Tell the clinician if the skin is broken or very tender so the pressure and gel application can be adapted. Ask what the images suggest and whether follow-up assessment is needed.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for a suddenly swollen, hot or red joint, a new inability to bear weight or use a limb, marked weakness, loss of sensation, or pain after a significant injury. Seek urgent help for a cold or pale limb, severe increasing pain, or rapidly spreading redness with fever; these signs need clinical assessment rather than an ultrasound explanation alone.
