Why is next-generation sequencing used in breast cancer gene expression test?

A gene expression test examines which genes in a tumour sample are more or less active. Next-generation sequencing reads RNA or related genetic signals from the sample, depending on the assay, and produces a pattern that the laboratory interprets. That pattern can add biological information to the tumour’s appearance, hormone-receptor findings, HER2 status, grade, and stage.

The result is one part of treatment planning. It may help the oncology team discuss the possible value of additional systemic treatment after considering the whole clinical picture. The test does not replace pathology, imaging, or a conversation about your preferences and overall health.

Ask whether enough suitable tumour tissue is available, what the assay measures, and how the report will be used in your treatment discussion. Tell the team about prior treatment or surgery that could affect the available sample. Request an explanation of the report in plain language, including what the result can and cannot predict.

The test itself does not usually require urgent action. Contact your oncology team if you are worried that waiting for the report is delaying a planned decision, or if the result is unclear. Seek urgent care for new severe symptoms such as sudden breathing difficulty, heavy bleeding, severe pain, or sudden weakness; a gene expression result cannot assess those symptoms.

Ask which genes and signals the assay measures, whether your tumour sample is suitable, how the result relates to hormone receptors and HER2, what treatment choices it may inform, and when the report will be reviewed with you.
