Why is breast tomosynthesis used in mammogram?

A standard mammogram produces two-dimensional views. Tomosynthesis takes several low-dose X-ray images from different angles and combines them into thin slices through the breast. The reader can move through these slices instead of viewing all the tissue on one flat image.

This approach can help separate overlapping breast structures. It may make an area look more clearly defined and help the radiologist decide whether it needs further assessment. It does not by itself confirm or rule out cancer; the images are interpreted alongside your symptoms, examination, and previous breast images when available.

During the examination, the breast is positioned and briefly compressed, much as it is for a conventional mammogram. The tomosynthesis images are taken during the same appointment. Wear clothing that is easy to remove from the waist up, and tell the imaging team if you are pregnant, might be pregnant, or have breast implants.

Arrange medical assessment promptly for a new breast lump, bloody nipple discharge, a nipple that turns inward unexpectedly, skin dimpling, or a persistent change in breast shape. Do not wait for a scheduled screening appointment if a new change is concerning.

After imaging, contact the service if you develop marked swelling, increasing pain, or skin injury at the compression area. Most temporary tenderness settles, but worsening symptoms deserve advice.

Ask whether tomosynthesis is recommended for your reason for imaging, whether a targeted ultrasound or other view is also needed, and how you will receive the result. You can also ask what symptoms should prompt a review before the next screening visit.
