Why does urinary tract infection cause bedwetting?

When the bladder lining is inflamed, it can send strong signals that it needs emptying even when only a small amount of urine is present. During sleep, a child or adult may not wake in time to respond to that urgency. Infection can also bring frequent daytime urination, burning, lower abdominal discomfort, or urine that looks or smells different. Bedwetting is a common presentation of Urinary Tract Infection. It is not the only explanation for wet nights, particularly when bedwetting has been ongoing without other urinary symptoms.

A new return of bedwetting after a dry period, or bedwetting with urinary symptoms, should be discussed with a clinician. A urine sample may be used to check for infection. Note daytime toilet frequency, pain, fever, thirst, constipation, and changes in sleep so the clinician has a clear picture. Avoid blaming or punishing a child; wetting linked to illness is not deliberate.

Seek same-day medical advice if bedwetting occurs with fever, vomiting, back or side pain, blood in urine, or a child who seems unusually sleepy or unwell. Get urgent help if there is trouble passing urine, severe pain, confusion, or signs of dehydration. These symptoms can require prompt assessment for a more significant urinary infection.
