Why does type 2 diabetes cause blurred vision?

Type 2 diabetes can cause blurred vision because changes in blood glucose can shift fluid in the eye's lens and alter how it focuses light. The blur may come and go as glucose changes, making reading, driving, or seeing signs clearly more difficult. Blurred Vision is a very common presentation of Type 2 Diabetes, but it also has many causes unrelated to diabetes.

Glucose moves between the bloodstream and body tissues. When glucose is high or changing quickly, the lens inside the eye can take up or release fluid. That can change its shape and its focusing power, rather like a camera losing focus. This short-term change can improve when glucose becomes steadier. Over time, diabetes can also affect the small blood vessels in the retina, the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. A dilated eye examination can look for retinal changes that may not be noticeable at first.

If your vision is blurry, check your blood glucose as advised in your personal care plan and note whether the symptom changes with meals, illness, medicines, or missed doses. Arrange a review with your diabetes clinician and book the recommended eye screening or eye examination. Do not change diabetes medicine or use someone else's eye drops to treat the blur. If you need new glasses, tell the optometrist or eye doctor if your glucose has been fluctuating, because vision can change while the lens is settling.

Seek urgent medical assessment for sudden loss of vision, a dark curtain or shadow across vision, new flashing lights, many new floaters, severe eye pain, or blurred vision with weakness, facial drooping, confusion, or trouble speaking. These symptoms need prompt assessment because they can signal an eye or neurological problem. Contact your clinician soon if blur persists, is getting worse, or is interfering with everyday tasks, even if you otherwise feel well.

Ask whether your recent glucose pattern could explain the timing of the blur, when your next dilated retinal examination is due, and whether an eye specialist assessment is needed. Bring a list of medicines and any glucose readings you have recorded. Mention whether the blurring affects one eye or both, happens suddenly or gradually, and comes with headache, pain, flashes, or floaters.
