Why does text neck cause neck stiffness?

Short answer
Text neck can cause neck stiffness when prolonged downward viewing keeps neck and shoulder muscles working without enough variation.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common trigger
- Long periods looking down at a device
- Practical adjustment
- Bring the screen up and vary your position
Why the posture can hurt
When a screen is held low, the head tends to lean forward and the muscles behind the neck work to hold it up. Remaining there through scrolling, gaming, reading or messaging can leave those muscles fatigued and protective tightening can follow. Neck Stiffness is a common presentation of Text Neck; it does not establish the cause of stiffness on its own.
You may also notice aching between the shoulder blades, a headache that begins at the back of the head, or discomfort after a long session. Symptoms often relate more to sustained posture and too little movement than to one particular device.
Ways to reduce strain
Raise the device closer to eye level when practical, support your arms, and change position before discomfort builds. Break up sustained viewing with short movement breaks: look ahead, relax the shoulders and slowly move the neck through a comfortable range. For a desk setup, place the main screen in front of you and keep frequently used items within easy reach.
A warm pack may ease muscle soreness if used carefully. Build in sleep, regular activity and a varied working posture rather than trying to hold one rigid “perfect” position all day.
When to get medical advice
Get urgent help for neck stiffness with fever, a severe sudden headache, confusion, fainting, weakness, numbness that is spreading, trouble walking, or symptoms after a significant injury. Book a clinician if pain persists, keeps returning despite changes, travels down an arm, or affects daily tasks. They can check for causes beyond posture and advise on treatment.
Questions to ask
Ask which signs suggest a nerve problem, whether physiotherapy would suit your symptoms, and which activities to modify temporarily. Mention your screen habits, any injury, arm symptoms and the positions that make stiffness better or worse.

Questions people ask
Can text neck cause a headache?
Tight muscles at the upper neck and back of the head can accompany a headache, particularly after sustained screen use.
Is stretching enough to treat text neck?
Gentle movement can help, but changing the prolonged posture and taking regular breaks are also important. Persistent symptoms deserve clinical advice.
