Short answer

Sinusitis can cause postnasal drip because swollen sinus tissue changes how mucus drains, allowing it to run toward the back of the throat.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Why it happens
Inflammation can slow and redirect normal mucus drainage.
Common sensations
Throat clearing, cough, hoarseness, or mucus at the back of the throat.
Urgent warning signs
Eye swelling, vision changes, severe headache, confusion, stiff neck, or breathing difficulty.

The short answer

Postnasal Drip is a common presentation of Sinusitis. The drainage may feel thin and clear, or thicker when mucus has become harder to move.

What is happening in the sinuses

The sinuses normally make mucus that is carried into the nose and throat without much notice. During sinusitis, inflammation narrows the drainage passages and can make mucus linger. It may then collect and travel along the back of the nose rather than draining freely forward.

This can lead to throat clearing, a cough that is more noticeable when lying down, a hoarse feeling, or an unpleasant taste. These symptoms can also occur with allergies, a cold, irritants, or reflux, so postnasal drip alone does not identify the cause.

Ways to ease the irritation

Drink fluids regularly and avoid smoke or strong scents that can further irritate the nose and throat. Gentle saline nasal rinsing or spray may help loosen mucus; use sterile, distilled, or previously boiled and cooled water for any rinse device.

Sleeping with your head slightly raised can reduce the sensation of drainage pooling in the throat. A pharmacist or clinician can help you choose suitable treatment if symptoms are persistent, especially if you have other medical conditions or use regular medicines.

When to get medical help

Arrange a medical assessment if facial pain, nasal blockage, fever, or drainage is not settling, keeps returning, or is disrupting sleep and daily activity. Seek urgent care for swelling or redness around an eye, changes in vision, severe headache, confusion, a stiff neck, or trouble breathing.

Useful questions for a clinician

Ask whether your pattern fits sinusitis or whether allergy, reflux, or another nasal condition should be considered. You can also ask how to use saline rinses safely, whether a nasal medicine is appropriate for you, and which changes should prompt follow-up.

Questions people ask

Can sinusitis cause a cough?

Yes. Drainage touching the throat can trigger coughing or repeated throat clearing, and it may be more noticeable when you lie down.

Does thick mucus prove that sinusitis is bacterial?

No. Mucus texture can change as it dries or lingers. A clinician considers the full pattern of symptoms and your examination when deciding on the cause.
