Why does sinusitis cause headache?

The sinuses are air spaces around the nose and eyes. During sinusitis, their lining can become inflamed and make extra mucus. Blocked drainage can create a feeling of fullness or pressure, often around the cheeks, forehead, eyes or upper teeth. Headache is a very common presentation of Sinusitis, but a headache also has many other possible causes. Pain that changes when you bend forward can occur when congestion is present, although this feature alone does not identify the cause.

Drink fluids regularly and rest if you feel unwell. Saline nasal rinses or sprays may help clear mucus; use clean water prepared as directed for nasal rinsing. A warm shower or warm compress over the face may feel soothing. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether pain relief, a nasal spray or another treatment is suitable for you, especially if you are pregnant or take regular medicines.

Arrange clinical assessment if facial pain, blocked nose or headache is persistent, keeps returning, or interferes with normal activities. Seek urgent care for swelling or redness around an eye, a severe or rapidly worsening headache, confusion, stiff neck, fainting, a new weakness, or changes in vision. These warning signs need prompt assessment regardless of the suspected cause.
