Why does shingles cause chest pain?

Shingles follows the path of a nerve, so discomfort commonly forms a band on one side of the chest or back. Pain, tingling or heightened skin sensitivity may appear before the typical clustered blistering rash. Chest Pain is a common presentation of Shingles when the affected nerve serves the chest. However, chest pain has many possible causes, and a rash does not rule out an unrelated heart or lung problem.

Contact a clinician promptly if a new painful rash or nerve-like chest pain suggests shingles. Early assessment can confirm the cause and discuss treatment options, especially when the rash is new or pain is significant. Keep the rash clean and dry, avoid picking blisters, and cover it loosely if needed. Avoid close skin contact with people who have not had chickenpox or have a weakened immune system until lesions have crusted.

Call emergency services now for pressure, tightness or heaviness in the chest; pain spreading to the arm, jaw, neck or back; breathlessness; sweating; fainting; or sudden severe illness. Seek urgent care for a rash near the eye, changes in vision, widespread rash, or pain that is difficult to manage. These symptoms need assessment even if shingles seems likely.
