Why do ovarian cysts cause persistent bloating?

As an ovarian cyst grows, it may occupy space beside the bowel or bladder. That pressure can feel like fullness, tightness, visible distension, or discomfort after eating. Irritation from a leaking cyst can also make the lower abdomen feel unsettled. Symptoms vary with the cyst's size, position, and whether it changes over time.

Bloating is not specific to ovarian cysts. Constipation, gas, food intolerance, hormonal changes, and other pelvic conditions can cause it. A clinician looks at the whole pattern rather than using bloating alone to identify a cause.

Keep a brief symptom diary covering meals, bowel movements, periods, abdominal swelling, pain, and urinary changes. Arrange a review if bloating persists, returns frequently, or is accompanied by pain or early fullness. Do not assume that dietary changes alone explain ongoing symptoms; a clinician can decide whether examination or imaging is appropriate.

Seek urgent help for sudden severe abdominal or pelvic pain, repeated vomiting, fainting, fever, heavy bleeding, or a rapidly enlarging and tender abdomen. These changes can occur with complications such as rupture or twisting and should be assessed promptly.

Ask whether the bloating pattern could relate to a cyst, whether an ultrasound is useful, how symptoms will be monitored, and what changes should trigger urgent review.
