Why does lung cancer cause persistent cough?

Persistent Cough is a very common presentation of Lung Cancer. The cough may be dry or may bring up mucus, and its sound can change as an airway becomes irritated or narrowed.

Coughing is a protective reflex that helps clear the airways. A growth near a bronchus can stimulate this reflex, while partial blockage can trap mucus and make infection more likely. Fluid around the lung or irritation of the lung lining can also make breathing and coughing uncomfortable.

Use only cough medicines recommended for your situation, because some products interact with cancer medicines or cause drowsiness. Keeping hydrated, avoiding smoke and strong scents, and sitting upright may reduce irritation for some people.

Get urgent help if you are struggling to breathe, coughing up more than a small streak of blood, developing blue lips, experiencing severe chest pain, fainting, or becoming confused. Contact your team promptly for a new cough, a rapidly worsening cough, or fever.
