Why does hypothyroidism cause constipation?

Short answer

Hypothyroidism can cause constipation because low thyroid hormone slows the muscles and nerves that move food and stool through the bowel.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Bowel effect
Slower movement through the colon
Stool change
More water absorption can make stool harder

What changes in the bowel

Digestion depends on coordinated contractions that move bowel contents forward. When thyroid activity is low, that movement can become slower. More water may be absorbed from stool while it remains in the colon, making it drier or harder to pass. Constipation is a common presentation of Hypothyroidism. It can also result from low fluid intake, a change in routine, limited movement, diet, medicines, pregnancy, or another bowel condition.

Ways to manage it

Continue prescribed thyroid treatment and attend planned monitoring, because correcting low hormone levels may help restore normal gut movement. Drink fluids regularly, add fibre gradually through foods you tolerate, and build gentle activity into the day. Give yourself unhurried time for the toilet when you feel the urge. Ask a pharmacist or clinician before using laxatives regularly, particularly if you have abdominal pain or take other medicines.

When to seek care

Make an appointment if constipation is persistent, has changed noticeably from your usual pattern, or is not improving with simple measures. Seek urgent assessment for severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, blood in stool, black stool, fever, or inability to pass stool or gas. These features need evaluation beyond a thyroid explanation.

Questions for your clinician

Ask whether your thyroid levels are in the intended range, whether any medicines may be slowing your bowel, and what constipation treatment suits your health history. Mention any family history of bowel disease and any unintentional weight change.

Questions people ask

Can constipation continue after thyroid treatment starts?

It can take time for bowel habits to settle, and constipation may have more than one cause. A clinician can review ongoing symptoms and your treatment plan.

Can I take a laxative with thyroid medicine?

Some products and supplements can affect the absorption of thyroid medicine. Check timing and product choice with a pharmacist or clinician.
