Why does hand eczema cause cracked skin?

Hand Eczema inflames the skin and disrupts the barrier that normally holds moisture in and irritants out. Water, soaps, detergents, solvents, cold air, and repeated friction can then remove more protective oils. The surface becomes dry, tight, scaly, and less flexible. Bending a finger or gripping an object stretches that stiffened skin, allowing painful fissures to form around the knuckles, fingertips, or sides of the fingers.

Small cracks can sting when exposed to water or household products. They can also make everyday tasks harder. Cracked hands have several possible causes, so the pattern, exposures, and examination help distinguish Hand Eczema from contact allergy, infection, psoriasis, or another skin condition.

Wash with lukewarm water and a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser, then pat dry and apply a thick moisturiser while the skin is still slightly damp. Reapply after washing. Use protective gloves for wet or chemical tasks, with a soft cotton layer if sweating or irritation develops. Avoid picking flakes or using harsh antiseptics on open cracks. A clinician can prescribe anti-inflammatory treatment when barrier care alone is not enough.

Seek assessment when fissures keep reopening, interfere with work or sleep, or do not improve with careful moisturising and irritant avoidance. Prompt care is needed for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, fever, or rapidly worsening pain, which may indicate infection.
