Why does hallux rigidus cause foot pain?

Hallux rigidus affects the joint at the base of the big toe. Reduced upward movement makes the foot roll forward differently, increasing pressure around the joint and sometimes under the forefoot. Foot Pain is a common presentation of Hallux Rigidus. Pain may be accompanied by stiffness, swelling or a hard bump on top of the joint, with symptoms often worse in shoes that press on that area.

Choose shoes with a roomy toe box and a sole that does not force the big toe to bend sharply. Reduce activities that repeatedly provoke pain, while keeping comfortable movement. A podiatrist or physiotherapist can assess gait, footwear and exercises; a clinician can discuss other options if daily walking remains difficult. Avoid forcing the toe through painful movement.

Book an assessment if pain is changing how you walk, limiting work or exercise, or persisting despite footwear changes. Seek prompt care after an injury, for sudden severe swelling or redness, or if the toe becomes numb, pale or cold. These features may need a different evaluation.

Ask how much joint movement remains, whether an X-ray would clarify the changes, and which shoes or activities are suitable. Discuss exercises, symptom relief and the signs that would make a specialist review helpful.
