Why Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause Causes Vaginal Itching

After menopause, lower oestrogen can reduce natural moisture and alter the protective vaginal environment. The skin and lining may become more delicate, so ordinary friction, sweat, urine or cleansing products can cause irritation. Itching may be felt inside the vagina, around the vulva or at the entrance, and scratching can create further soreness.

Itching also occurs with thrush, bacterial imbalance, sexually transmitted infections, eczema, lichen sclerosus and contact reactions. A change in discharge, odour, sores or pain can point to another cause. Symptoms alone cannot identify the reason.

Wash gently with lukewarm water or a mild fragrance-free cleanser on the outer skin, then pat dry. Avoid douching, scented pads, bubble baths and products that burn or sting. Wear breathable underwear and change out of damp clothing. Try not to scratch; a cool compress may soothe the area.

If symptoms persist, a clinician can examine the skin and test discharge when needed. Treatment may involve a vaginal moisturiser, local oestrogen or medicine for an infection or skin condition, depending on the cause.

Arrange an assessment for new, persistent or recurring itching, especially with discharge, odour, bleeding, sores, cracks, pain or urinary burning. Seek prompt care for severe swelling, fever, spreading redness or feeling very unwell. Do not repeatedly self-treat for thrush without confirming the diagnosis.

Ask whether the itching is from tissue changes, infection, allergy or a skin condition, and whether an examination or swab is needed. Tell the clinician about new products, discharge, bleeding, urinary symptoms and treatments already tried.
