Short answer

Joint Swelling is a common presentation of Bursitis. A bursa is a fluid-filled cushion that helps tissues glide over bone. Repeated pressure, friction, a knock, or an underlying inflammatory problem can irritate its lining. The bursa may then collect extra fluid, while nearby tissues become tender and puffy. The swelling is often most noticeable over a point such as the elbow, kneecap, hip, or shoulder rather than throughout the whole joint.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Source of swelling
Extra fluid and inflammation in or around a bursa.
Common trigger
Repeated pressure or friction.

What swelling may indicate

Bursitis-related swelling can feel soft or fluctuant and may hurt when the area is pressed or used. Movement may be uncomfortable because the enlarged bursa is compressed during bending or leaning. Swelling around a joint can also come from an injury, arthritis, infection, or fluid inside the joint itself, so location and associated symptoms matter. A clinician may examine the area and decide whether further testing is appropriate.

What you can do at home

Avoid the pressure or repeated motion that aggravates the area, such as kneeling or leaning on an elbow. Rest it between necessary activities, use a wrapped cold pack for short intervals, and keep normal gentle movement within comfort so stiffness does not build. Padding may protect a bursa from contact. A health professional can guide rehabilitation and safe pain relief based on your health history.

When medical review is needed

Seek prompt medical care if swelling is hot, very red, rapidly increasing, or accompanied by fever, chills, or feeling unwell, because an infected bursa needs assessment. Arrange a review when swelling does not settle, keeps returning, restricts movement, or follows a significant injury. Do not pierce or drain the swelling yourself.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which bursa is affected and whether the swelling is outside the joint or within it. Ask how long to modify the aggravating activity, whether you need physiotherapy, and which changes would suggest infection or another diagnosis.
