Why does anaemia cause pale skin?

Short answer
Anaemia can make skin appear pale because reduced haemoglobin changes the colour of blood seen through the skin and mucous membranes.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Where pallor may be noticed
Haemoglobin gives oxygen-rich blood its red colour. When its level is reduced, paleness may be more noticeable in the lips, gums, inside the lower eyelids, palms or nail beds than on the face. Natural skin tone, lighting, temperature and circulation can all alter how pallor looks.
Pale Skin is a very common presentation of Anaemia. Pallor can also occur with a cold environment, illness, reduced circulation or normal variation in skin tone, so appearance alone cannot diagnose anaemia. A blood test is the reliable way to check whether haemoglobin is low.
How to respond
Make an appointment if you have persistent pallor together with tiredness, weakness, breathlessness, dizziness or reduced exercise tolerance. The clinician may ask about diet, pregnancy, menstrual bleeding, bowel changes, chronic illness and medicines, then decide which blood tests are appropriate.
Do not rely on a mirror check to follow treatment. Record new symptoms and any bleeding, and take medicines or supplements only as directed. If iron deficiency is confirmed, the clinician can explain how to take iron and how progress will be monitored.
When to seek urgent care
Seek urgent assessment for marked pallor with fainting, chest pain, severe shortness of breath, confusion or a persistent racing heartbeat. Get prompt help if pallor follows major bleeding, or if you have black stools, blood in vomit, or bleeding that is heavier than usual.
Questions worth asking
Ask whether your examination suggests anaemia, which test will clarify it, and whether there are clues to blood loss or nutrient deficiency. Ask what changes would mean you should return sooner.

Questions people ask
Can pale skin diagnose anaemia?
No. Pallor has several possible causes, and a blood test is needed to confirm anaemia.
Does pallor always look the same?
No. It can be easier to notice at inner surfaces such as the gums or lower eyelids, and varies with skin tone and lighting.
