Whooping cough and tetanus shot: what to know

Tetanus and whooping cough are different infections, but some immunisations combine protection against both with protection against other illnesses. The label used for a vaccine can vary, so it is sensible to check which components it contains rather than assuming every tetanus-containing injection covers whooping cough. Vaccination can be considered for routine prevention, at particular life stages, or after an injury depending on the situation and local schedule.

Bring any vaccination record you have and explain why you are asking: a routine update, pregnancy planning, contact with a newborn, travel, or a recent wound. Tell the clinician about past reactions to vaccines, allergies, current illness, and medicines that affect immunity. If a wound is dirty, deep, punctured, or caused by an animal bite, seek prompt medical care for wound cleaning and advice; do not rely on memory of an old injection.

Whooping cough can present with repeated coughing bouts, vomiting after coughs, exhaustion, or a whoop during the breath in. Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, pauses in breathing, a seizure, or reduced responsiveness. Babies with cough, feeding difficulty, or breathing changes need urgent assessment. Seek urgent care for an infected-looking wound, spreading redness, swelling, pus, fever, or severe pain.

Ask which vaccine product is suitable, whether it includes protection against whooping cough and tetanus, and whether any doses are due. If there is a cough illness or wound, ask whether separate assessment or treatment is needed and what symptoms should prompt urgent review.
