Whiteheads in the hair scalp: what to know

A closed pore can appear as a pale, raised bump around a hair follicle. Heavy styling products, infrequent cleansing after sweating, tight headwear, or friction may contribute. Scalp acne can include comedones, while folliculitis may cause more tenderness, redness, itching, or pus. Dandruff-related inflammation and cysts can also be mistaken for whiteheads, so location and symptoms matter.

Cleanse the scalp regularly with a gentle shampoo and rinse styling products thoroughly. Keep brushes, hats, and pillowcases clean, and avoid picking or scraping bumps through the hair. Pause oily pomades or leave-in products that touch the scalp and note whether the pattern changes. A dermatologist can advise whether a topical retinoid or another treatment fits the diagnosis; do not apply facial products broadly to the scalp without guidance.

Book an appointment if bumps are painful, intensely itchy, recurrent, draining, associated with hair loss, or spreading across the scalp. Prompt evaluation is sensible for marked swelling, warmth, fever, or tenderness. A clinician may inspect follicles and ask about new hair products, sweating, headwear, and medicines to distinguish acne from infection or another scalp disorder.
