Which specialist performs colposcopy?

Colposcopy is a closer examination of the cervix, usually after a cervical screening result or an appearance that needs review. The obstetrician-gynaecologist places a speculum, applies solutions that make areas easier to see, and views the cervix through a colposcope. The colposcope stays outside the vagina. If an area needs checking, the clinician may take a small biopsy.

A nurse or assistant may support positioning, explanation, and aftercare. The appointment is designed to investigate cervical cells or tissue; being referred for colposcopy does not by itself establish a cancer diagnosis.

Arrange the appointment with the colposcopy or gynaecology clinic named in your referral. Tell the clinic if you are pregnant, take blood-thinning medicine, or have a condition that affects bleeding. Ask whether you should avoid vaginal products beforehand, whether you may bring a support person, and how biopsy results will be delivered.

Mild spotting or period-like discomfort can occur after a biopsy, but contact the clinic if bleeding becomes heavy, pain is severe or worsening, discharge smells unpleasant, or you develop fever. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, faintness, or severe pelvic pain. Use the aftercare instructions given by your clinic.
