Which specialist performs bone density scan?

A bone density scan, often called a DEXA scan, uses low-dose X-rays to assess bone mineral density, commonly at the hip and spine. A radiographer positions you on the scanning table and keeps the body area still while the equipment passes over it. The radiologist reviews the study and issues a report. Your general practitioner, endocrinologist, rheumatologist, or another requesting clinician combines that report with fracture history, medicines, age, and other risks before discussing next steps.

Wear comfortable clothing and tell the imaging service if you could be pregnant, recently had a contrast examination, or take medicines that affect bones.
