When to worry about a runny nose with pet allergy

Pet allergy is an immune response to proteins carried in an animal's dander, saliva, or other particles. Runny nose commonly appears with sneezing, nasal blockage, itchy eyes, and an itchy throat. Symptoms may start during contact or after particles have been carried on clothing and furniture. Cough, wheeze, or chest tightness can suggest that the lower airways are involved and deserves clinical attention, particularly if it recurs around animals.

Keep the pet out of the bedroom, wash hands after contact, and change clothes if exposure leaves you symptomatic. Clean soft furnishings and floors using methods that do not spread dust through the room. If avoiding exposure is difficult, an allergy clinician can discuss testing and a longer-term plan. Do not stop prescribed asthma treatment because the nose feels better.

Arrange a medical review when nasal symptoms persist, impair sleep, or limit work, school, or exercise despite practical changes. Get prompt advice for repeated wheezing, nighttime cough, or chest tightness. Call emergency services for severe breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat, faintness, or rapidly spreading hives. These signs can indicate a serious allergic reaction, especially when they develop soon after exposure.
